Newport is a town located in Herkimer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,192. The Town of Newport, located on the western edge of the county, contains the village called Newport (village), New York.


The western town line is the border of Oneida County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 84.2 square kilometer (32.5 square mile). 83.0 km� (32.0 mi�) of it is land and 1.2 km� (0.5 mi�) of it is water. The total area is 1.45% water.


As of the censusGeographic references 2 of 2000, there are 2,192 people, 831 households, and 595 families residing in the town. The population density is 26.4/km� (68.4/mi�). There are 897 housing units at an average density of 10.8/km� (28.0/mi�). The racial makeup of the town is 98.77% White (U.S. Census), 0.41% African American (U.S. Census) or Race (U.S. Census), 0.00% Native American (U.S. Census), 0.05% Asian (U.S. Census), 0.00% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census), 0.23% from Race (U.S. Census), and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic (U.S. Census) or Latino (U.S. Census) of any race. There are 831 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are Marriage living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.11. In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $37,300, and the median income for a family is $42,273. Males have a median income of $30,433 versus $25,391 for females.
